An Brief Overview Of Hang Gliding North Carolina

By Stephen Watson

Extreme recreational activities and sports often include downhill skiing, skydiving and hang gliding often top the list. If looking to take Hang Gliding Classes, Kitty Hawk Hang Gliding North Carolina offers a number of different programs. Whereas, if living in other areas, doing a quick online search can often provide a number of optional training sites.

The first individual who removed the strings to the kite simply to see what would happen took a bold step. For, most early pioneers of these gliders could not ensure a safe flight. In most cases, the delay in a safety guarantee was due to a lack of understanding as to how the wings of a bird works to create flight

Gliders which allowed control by the flyer were first built in the 1890s by Otto Lillenthal. These early gliders allowed Otto to take flight off small hills, cliffs and ridges. After which, Otto recorded the designs and work involved to build various models and flight history. As a result, Lillenthal became one of the most well known figures in aviation by past and present aeronautic enthusiasts.

The first to experience double sail gliding was Jan Lavezzari. While this is the case, Jan had to build more flexible and stronger wings than that of past gliders. One of the most historic flights in hang gliding history is the flight Lavezzari took from Berck, France. Later, people everywhere began trying to take flight but could only do so off small hills until the early to mid 1900s.

The most popular of all gliders is that of the biplane hang glider. For, the model was publicized in a number of magazines along with plans for building such aircraft. Then, once Octave Chante demonstrated these biplane gliders, popularity grew even more. Whereas, in 1904, an article by Carl S. Bates on hang gliding assisted builders of the past, present and most likely future by providing the instructions for building a biplane glider called VJ-11, a glider which is built on a triple axis with foot launch capability.

Modern day gliders use two type of materials for a single or double sail. These materials include woven polyester fabrics, and laminated fabrics made up of a combination of various materials and woven polyester fabrics. Whichever materials are used, it is important the cloths and materials are free of holes, tears or other damage to assure a safe, fun and well controlled flight.

The laminated version of the sailcloth also uses polyester film for the best flight performance possible. Whereas, the woven sailcloth also consist of small polyester fibers which have stabilized the process of impregnating polyester resin into the weave. Whether using laminated versions of sailcloth or woven ones, it is important to always keep and store the material in a safe environment.

Gliding is often considered a recreational activity or sport. Due to the feel of taking flight and flying across long distances, more people tend to participate in the activity than sky diving. In either case, participation in these events requires the participant have knowledge of the equipment, especially the controls along with rules, regulations and safety measures associated with the activity. While this is the case, gliding schools and flight centers often require individuals to complete a non-liability agreement before taking flight.
