By William Morris

Currently you are reading this article right now due to the fact that you probably own an airplane, or are in fact tasked with the job of taking care of one. To make your job easier, you want to practice some preventive maintenance practices, and for this to succeed you need to have a bit more information on critical components in the overall system. One of the critical components in having a healthy and well maintained aircraft is the use of aircraft turbine oil. Your choice of turbine oil will determine will determine the overall health of your engine. If you want to know more about this, then do read on.

The use of high quality oil, hand in hand with routine maintenance, are both very important in keeping your aircraft airworthy all year round. When looking at the general market for dependable and high quality gas turbine oils, you will always most likely find Mobil and Aero Shell on the shelves. However, do take note that that these are not the only brands available, for many also exist apart from these two popular brands.

Aircraft gas turbine engines, although using the same principle of internal combustion, are different from piston engines as found in cars. As they are different, they will require a different kind of oil also. Gas turbines rely on the build up of pressurized gas to spin the turbine. The source of course of this pressurized gas is created by the burning of jet fuel.

Combustion processes for jet fuel occur in environments of high temperature as well as high speed. With this combustion environment in mind, you need to choose an oil that is also built for this environment. In addition, the oil you have in mind must give good high temperature corrosion protection, as well as good anti wear properties. It should also be purposely built for turbine and jet engines in mind for it will need to have excellent thermal and oxidation properties.

When you do start to choose your oil, ensure that the one you have an eye on is approved for the commercial application that you have in mind. Thus choose one that has the flexibility to be used in a wide range of commercial applications. If possible, get one that has passed military specifications as well and is approved for military use. This is military approval is not overtly needed, but can however serve to give you more confidence in its use, also peace of mind to boot.

Depending on your budget or how deep your pockets are, you can go for OEM oils apart from market ones. OEM basically means original equipment manufacturer, and they can cost a little bit more than standard after market oils. It just means that if you have a Mitsubishi engine, you get the oil designed for that specific engine that is made and sold by the engine manufacturer themselves.

Price is also something that you want to look at for the long term. In general it is usually better to buy in bulk so you want a seller or manufacturer who can also provide by the drum as well as transportation to your site. This of course necessitates that you have adequate storage facilities also.

This article has shown some considerations that you should mull over when looking for your oil needs. There are of course other factors that you should research on, but suffice it to say that what has been covered in this article is sufficient for you to start your inquiry.
